Saints closing in on new manager

St Johnstone are expected to reveal the identity of their new manager at a media conference on Tuesday.
Caretaker manager Sandy Stewart has agreed to join Burnley manager Owen Coyle and become part of the coaching staff at Turf Moor.

"It's the hardest decision of my footballing career," Stewart told the club website.

Coyle left Saints last week to become the new manager of the English Championship club.

Saints have called a media conference for 0930 GMT on Tuesday, when the club is expected to announce Coyle's successor.

Stewart was in charge of Saints for Sunday's 3-2 Challenge Cup Final win over Dunfermline.

Owen is keen to have me down there as soon as possible but he is very aware of the situation with Saints

After the victory he had indicated he would be interested in succeeding Coyle at McDairmid Park.

But on Monday he revealed the lure of joining Coyle in England proved too strong.

"The opportunity to work down south to help Owen try to take Burnley into the Premiership is just too great," he said.

"Who knows, maybe in two or three years time I'll look back and regret the decision but that is the chance you take and I know that I'll regret it if I don't take the opportunity to try it out," Stewart said.

He praised the St Johnstone players following their Challenge Cup success, adding: "Saints have a team who are capable of being in the SPL and whoever the next manager is has a great chance to take the club forward."

Stewart said the date of his departure was yet to be decided, but he would most likely remain in Perth until Saints appointed a new manager.

"Owen is keen to have me down there as soon as possible but he is very aware of the situation with Saints and is very grateful to them for the way they handled his departure.

"He won't be putting pressure on me in terms of timescales.

"I'll be in on Tuesday to take training ahead of Saturday's match at Firhill.

"Unless I'm told otherwise or an appointment is made I'll take the team against Partick Thistle."

Saints are currently third in the First Division, while Burnley are 13th in the Championship.

BIG THANK YOU TO WEEKETTY FOR THIS SIG, (and also to BAZZA for help).

Brilliantly brought down by McFadden.
He's going for GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLL.
James McFadden scores the best goal he's scored for his country.
Absolutely sensational.
The top corner is tickled with the ball.
Scotland are tickled pink in Paris.
