| Hull's Dean Windass could be set for return to Aberdeen
ABERDEEN may make a shock move to bring former fans' favourite Dean Windass back to Pittodrie.
Boss Jimmy Calderwood admitted the 39-year-old hitman, who has been frozen out at Hull since winning promotion to the Premiership this season, is a possible target in the next transfer window.
Windass, who has been limited to just three appearances for Hull, expects to be made available for a loan deal in January and would welcome a return to the Dons.
Calderwood said: "We know all about Dean's situation and have done so for the last three weeks. You must consider every option.
"It would be wrong to tell our fans at this stage that we will definitely sign Dean. We have a lot of things to consider, like how long Tommy Wright is going to be out injured, for example.
"There are a few weeks before the transfer window opens again and you never know what sort of options might be put in front of us.
"But I'm aware that Dean is a hero to a lot of Aberdeen fans and they would be delighted if he came back.
"I also like the lad. I spoke to him in the summer when he asked us to provide the opposition for his testimonial match.
"We were already committed to going to Holland for the pre-season build-up but I was disappointed we had to turn him down.
"I also spoke to Dean's wife and she made it clear she would love it if he came back to Scotland. I wouldn't discard the chances of it happening at this stage."
The Dons boss, who has injury problems ahead of today's derby with Dundee United, is hoping to strengthen his squad in January.
The arrival of Windass on a short-term deal would increase competition for places up front.
Darren Mackie, with just two goals to his credit so far this season, would certainly be under pressure from the free-scoring veteran.
The Dons striker said: "Obviously, I am disappointed not to be scoring every week but as long as the team is getting results I'm happy.
"The only league game we have scored in twice is at Celtic, probably the hardest of them all. We're not scoring a lot of goals at the moment but if one is enough to win the game then I'll take it.
"The players at the back have done a great job in keeping clean sheets in recent weeks but now we need to get the goals to take the pressure off defensively.
"The lack of goals has to come to an end at some point and, hopefully, that will happen soon. It would be nice to go out and win well by scoring a few but personally trying to play well first is my priority. The goals will come.
"I've been top scorer a couple of times before and that's the aim again. I'm out of contract in the summer but I've never given it too much thought in the past and won't this time round either.
"We're confident. We have had to grind out results while United have gone on a good run since beating us here but we have the quality in our squad to get a result at Tannadice.
"However, we must cut out the mistakes which led to conceding cheap goals. At one point we were giving away a stupid goal every week but since beating Falkirk we have turned the corner.
"We want to challenge for a UEFA Cup place this season and United might be up there too but really I'm only focusing on what this club does.
If we beat United we go above them and into the place we want to be."
