FC Barcelona convincingly beat Inter Milan 5-0 with goals from Ronaldinho, Giovani, Toure Yaya, Iniesta and Motta, therefore securing their 32nd Joan Gamper Trophy.
It was, like all Joan Gamper nights, a special night. Following emotional tributes to both Nicolau Casaus and Antonio Puerta, Barça took to the field intent on dispelling the memories of last season’s sad finale. The magic returned to the Camp Nou on Wednesday, which also saw the four new signings make their home debuts.
Rijkaard’s men achieved an incredible result against a second string Inter team, without having to move up into top gear and enjoying almost every moment.
Goals to start
Barça needed little time to show the crowd they were up for the game. With Giovani down the right wing and Henry down the left, the blaugrana brought havoc to the Inter area within the opening 15 minutes.
In the opening stages, Giovani proved once again, as he had done in pre-season, his magnificent form—forcing a penalty, which Ronaldinho neatly tucked away in the sixth minute, and scored himself following a great few touches and beating Toldo at the near post.
Deco and Toure control the midfield
Inter were denied space in the midfield to mount any kind of attack. Deco and Toure cut out any attempts from the visitors, who appeared more concerned about conceding more goals than looking to get anything out of the game. The Ivory Coast man also played his part in the attacking moves, a header in the 16th was well kept out by Toldo; and a shot from 20 yards in the 30th minute.
The Barça ‘24’ was to try his luck from distance again in the 37th minute, and, on this occasion, got his just rewards, his shot flying in without giving Toldo a chance—an impressive shot. Mancini’s side, which appeared far from together, managed their first shot on target in the 27th, however, the first half ended 3-0.
Chance and Change for Eto’o
In one minute, Eto’o came on after the break—as had six other players, had a shot on goal, injured himself in the process and then was substituted for Motta.
Despite the change, the 11 on pitch continued to show their talent. Messi picked up the ball and began another run similar to his wonder goal against Getafe last season, however, this time he passed it through to Iniesta who made no mistake in finding the back of the net.
Motta with the fifth
With the game wrapped up, Barça began to move the ball from side to side making the visitors work hard. The second half saw even more shots on goal than the first. Deco hit the post in the 69th minute, Henry reacted well in the 70th to put the ball just wide and Motta found the fifth with a header off of a corner in the 81st. Five goals in an enjoyable game was a great tribute to both Casaus and Puerta. The Gamper trophy was Barça’s.
