| Strachan: Late's unite to beat United GORDON STRACHAN has called on the Celtic players and supporters to join forces and make help make history when Manchester United come to town tonight.
Sir Alex Ferguson brings his European champions north for the UEFA Champions League Group E match, knowing that a win for his side will kill off Celtic’s chances of progressing to the last 16 of the competition.
However, the Hoops manager has a proud record of six wins and one draw from seven group games at Celtic Park and believes a collective effort can help lead his side to another famous result.
He said: “Our supporters are always important for us. They’ve been fantastic and the European nights are really special at Celtic Park.
“Whatever happens in our careers, wherever we go in life, we won’t get any better than you get at Celtic Park. This is a magical place on a European night.
“Why is that? I don’t know but I find that evening games are more special anyway. There is a real warmth to them and these nights are special.
“Throughout history, we’ve managed to create some cracking nights. Every generation seems to have games to remember and over the last two years, there have been special occasions that I’ll certainly never forget.
“I’m sure the players will feel the same way. We’ll all try our best to create another historic evening on a really special occasion.”
Celtic have been widely written off since losing 3-0 to United two weeks ago, with Blackburn Rovers manager Paul Ince – whose club have won only once at Old Trafford in the last 15 years – having the audacity to label the defeat as “embarrassing”.
Yet, the manager believes anyone questioning the mentality and character of his players needs a reality check. Results speak for themselves.
He said: “The last few years have been fantastic. Did I think we could beat the teams we have at Celtic Park? When I looked at the crowd and the spirit of the players, I knew it was possible.
“We know we aren’t as good technically as Man United, but one thing you cannot doubt at this club is the character and determination of the players.
“It gets questioned every week. There are crisis points throughout the season but we’ve answered it every time. I’ve no problems with their determination, but sometimes you come up against a top side.
“Every year you last at Celtic, you become mentally stronger. It will be good fun on Wednesday night. We’re all looking forward to another exciting evening.”
